Typing Speed Test

See how fast and accurately you type, from a 15-second sprint to a 2-minute run, and watch your progress over time. Nothing leaves your device.

The timer starts with your first key. Esc also starts a new test.

Your progress

Your results are stored only in this browser. Export them to keep a copy.

No results yet. Finish a test and it appears here.

🔒 Runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.

Pick a test length and start typing. The timer starts with your first key, so there is no countdown to race. When it ends you get your words per minute, your accuracy, your raw speed, how many mistakes you made and a second-by-second chart of the run. Choose 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, or a fixed 10 to 100 words.

Also on Txtset: work out how long a speech takes to say · check every key on your keyboard.

Your progress is saved on this device, so you can see whether you are getting faster. The page keeps every finished test in your browser and shows your personal best for each kind of test, the average of your last ten, a daily streak and a chart of your last thirty results. There is no account and nothing is uploaded. Export the history as a file whenever you like, or clear it in two clicks.

The words are the commonest English words, so the test measures your typing and not your vocabulary. Switch on punctuation and numbers for a harder test that is closer to real writing, widen the pool from the 200 to the 1,000 commonest words, or paste your own text to practise a paragraph, a snippet of code or the words you keep getting wrong.

It works with an on-screen keyboard too, but a phone or tablet is usually slower than a physical keyboard, so compare like with like.

How to use

  1. Choose how long to type for, and the word list, punctuation and numbers if you want a harder test.
  2. Click the words (or tap them on a phone) and start typing. Press Space after each word. Backspace fixes the word you are on, and goes back to the previous word only if it had a mistake.
  3. When the time is up, or the last word is typed, read your WPM, accuracy and chart. Press Esc or New test to go again.
  4. Come back another day: your history, personal bests and streak are kept in this browser.

Examples

30 seconds, common 200
The default test: quick enough to repeat a few times and compare.
60 seconds with punctuation and numbers
Closer to everyday writing, with commas, full stops, question marks and the odd number.
10 words
A short sprint when you want a result in a few seconds.
Your own text
Paste a paragraph or a function you type often and practise it exactly as written.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?
WPM counts correctly typed words only: the characters of every word you got exactly right, plus the space after it, divided by five (the standard length of a “word”) and by the minutes taken. The word you are in the middle of when time runs out counts if everything typed in it so far is right. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong, the same way. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct: each letter that matched, and each space that followed a word spelt right. A mistake you fix with Backspace still counts, because you made it.
What is a good typing speed?
Rules of thumb, not standards: 30 to 40 WPM is common for people who do not type much, 50 to 60 is comfortable for office work and over 80 is fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed, because a fast score with many mistakes means a lot of corrections. Scores here are not directly comparable with other sites, because the word lists and the way mistakes are counted differ.
Which words does it use?
The 200 or 1,000 most common English words in random order, never the same word twice in a row. The list comes from the wordfreq project’s frequency data, filtered to ordinary dictionary words, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence — the credits and licence are here. There are no quotes from books or songs, so there is nothing to memorise and nothing copyrighted.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes: tap the words and the keyboard opens. The page switches off autocorrect and suggestions for its typing field, but a few keyboards ignore that, and swipe or voice entry is not a keystroke the test can score. If your keyboard keeps changing words, turn off predictive text for this site.
Where are my results stored?
In your browser’s local storage on this device only. They are never sent anywhere and are not tied to an account, so clearing your browser data erases them and they do not follow you to another device. Use Export results to save a copy as a JSON file and Import results to load it back, here or in another browser. Importing merges, and results already present are skipped.
What counts as the daily streak?
Consecutive calendar days, in your own time zone, on which you finished at least one test. It stays alive until the end of the day after your last test, so a streak of five is still five on a morning you have not tested yet, and it resets to zero once a whole day passes without one.
Does the timer start before I type?
No. It starts with your first key, and a timed test ends exactly when the time is up, so reading the words first costs nothing.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The word list is downloaded once (about 10 KB) and the test runs entirely in your browser. What you type is scored on the spot and never stored. Only the numbers — speed, accuracy, test length and when — are saved to your own history.
